secret 19 - when i grow up

as kids we all go through phases as to what we say we want to be when we grow up. we try them on and abandon them for different reasons. over the years, i've wanted to be:

: : a paleontologist - abandoned this idea rather early when i decided that all the good dinosaur bones would be discovered by the time i grew up.

: : a lawyer - this is the thing i assumed i would be for years. right up until i didn't get into law school.

: : a riding instructor - i actually carried around application materials for johnson & wales college in rhode island for this. i think i just wanted a really cool trunk for my riding equipment and i never did really apply.

: : governor of the state i grew up in - yup, i could have been the sarah palin of the upper midwest. or not.

: : russian literature professor - got the farthest towards this one. but then life took me in another direction. and i never really liked the teaching that much, what i liked was the writing and the research. and the theory. oh, the theory. still love that.

: : spy - abandoned when i realized that i never really could keep a secret and that if i were to spy it would most likely be for the other side (due to deep and abiding loathing for ronald reagan).

: : writer - i've always thought there was a highly autobiographical novel in me, waiting to come out. it might still. when the conditions are exactly right. it's kinda why we built that whole writing house place in the garden.

: : stewardess - this one never really seems to go away. it stays in the back of my head and although stewardesses are really just waitresses in the sky, i still have some kind of romantic picture of that job in my head (despite how much time i spend on planes).

jobs i've actually done:

: : secretary - a couple of times, once to the vice president of a refrigeration company and once to the head of a foundation.

: : newsroom gopher - at a daily paper during college. spent a lot of time at the courthouse writing down who had gotten all those public intox and public urination tickets on the weekend. i also had to call all the bars and find out what bands were playing where, so i always knew what was going on. that was cool.

: : waitress in my favorite pub - it really was a pub and i was hanging out there so much i decided i might as well get paid for it.

: : eLearning developer - making training materials for a product i knew very little about. ha! funny how that can happen.

: : middle management - responsibility for big budgets and some 200 days a year of travel.

: : journalist - now i'm editing a magazine.

and here we come to the secret...i still don't know what i want to be when i grow up. do you?

#1 oh yeah!

I really like the spy one, my mum is convinced she was part of the French resistance in a past life, she thinks she would make a great spy.

What do I want to be when I grow up?

Happy! :))

PS just finished composing the longest email to you, sorry ;)

I am still trying to figure that out too. I am presently trying to go back to school, so maybe will know in the near future!

Oh yeah, I knew when I was on to something ... When I began doing what I do, the hair on my neck actually tingled as I realized I was really doing something I enjoyed doing it. After that moment it was a slam dunk.

no, absolutely no idea. I am truly helpless in this area. I just need some one to hire me as a spokes person (ahhh hummm companies out there, I am available) or motivational speaker... :) funny!

I am going to get thrown back into the work force awfully soon too. Last child is going into preschool soon...sigh

I can relate to your post in a bunch of ways, in fact on my childhood list was lawyer, spy and not governor-but President! I wanted to be President.
So I got my degree in political science and have worked in the government field for 9 years. I'm burnt out...
Now what do I want to be? You'll never guess, but a nurse! A nurse of all things, but I really feel that is where I belong. This means going back to school, studying math and science two subjects that I've never really been good at and quitting a good paying, good benefit job.
I don't know when I'll be able to fulfill this dream, but I hope in the next couple of years. Its hard that it took me so long to figure it out, but so obvious to me all along. When I was little, what I did I play the most? Nurse and doctor's office. I never played 'lawyer'. I never played 'President' or 'spy'. I played doctor's office (I was the nurse) almost every day. Maybe just looking back at the little things of the past helps find the direction of the future.
I wish you luck...

Brilliant post!! I often look around and wonder how I got here.

As a child I wanted to be a professional musician, and spent all my 'youth' preparing for it. Duly went to uni and read music, and then completely changed my mind at the last minute. I panicked, and joined a bank on a graduate training scheme. So I was a Corporate Financier for a few years.

Then I blagged my way in to a professional fundraising job with a symphony orchestra, depsite having no experience. And then one of the corporate sponsors of the orchestra asked me to set up a marketing/communications department for them (why? I had no experience?) and so I did.

And that's how I became a specialist legal PR, and I'm still doing it 10 years on. I feel like a fell on my feet really as I love it, and I adored the firm I worked for. I was so sad when I left a year or so ago. But now I work freelance, and it's very flexible and pays well as it's such a specialist area.

But, really, how did I get here? I'm supposed to be a professional flautist!!

When I grow up I'm going to be..nice. Which will be, well, nice but a whole lot less funny.

x

I had a similar conversation with someone last night about this, he's an artist, and whenever he explains to people that he's an artist he tells them he's in charge of colouring in which makes it sound rather child-like.

When I grow up I want to be head waitress. Not just waitress waitress.

I too am being paid to hang out in my favourite pub, I work part time/ filler inner for anyone who's sick and what not and I love it. Absolutely the best job I've had.

Ummm wanted to be everything from a librarian to a fighter jet pilot... still feel there's something big out there, a book, a show on TLC, a limo....above all flippant and whimsical.

I think by writing this blog, you have gone some way to writing your autobiographical novel!

I want to be a teacher, and am almost there. It has been my goal for many years now, but I've realised in the last year that there are so many other things I want to do!

Maybe we never really know?

Those people who actually knew what they wanted to be when they grew up and then actually became that thing amaze me. I'm 56 and I'm still leaving my options open! Like you, I could never be a spy because I gossip too much... or maybe that's a good thing? You pick up so much good dirt on people that way.

a writer, a writer and still a writer! well my first three books are "only" text books but one day I'd love to write at least one novel. I also was on the stewardess-trip, it seemed to the only dream job in the whole world to me. i applied at lufthansa and made it through the tests and then became very very hesitant. and cancelled my application. nowadays - constantly sitting in planes - I am sooooo glad about that decision.

I'm not sure I want to grow up, but I want to be as many "things" as possible along the way.
