do rooms retain memories of the things they've seen? could you hear what they've heard if you just listened carefully enough? do they feel sorrow? pride? anger? neglect? do they miss the voices? do they hear them at all? or are they just there in all of their beingness. or are they nothing? empty. space. waiting. liminal.
I can assure you, after taking apart and restoring hundreds of antique chairs, tables, etc ... I never found sensory organs, synapses or ganglia.

People sat in these chairs. Fathers, others, grandpas with kids on their knees. It doesn't take much imagination to see it in your mind's eye.
ReplyDeleteI also wonder about spaces and who lived in them; rooms, bedrooms in ancient houses.
I'm Just back from Ecuador where I visited a small museum of modern art. The building had once been an insane asylum. The art was hanging in these small, cell-like rooms, and I could not help wondering what miseries and tragedies had lived themselves out in these spaces.
But ... I couldn't feel or sense anything there.
Which was good.
I'm glad they hold their tongues so we can invent the stories.
