quilt progress and a moment of stillness

i started a whirlygig quilt january 1 and to keep myself on track, i wanted to share my progress. i now have a finished quilt top! since i lack quilt batting and i want to use what i've got, i'm thinking of backing it with a cuddly dark purple fleece that i do have on hand. i love the other fleece-backed quilts i've made - they're somehow so much friendlier and more cuddly for sitting around watching t.v.

these anna maria horner innocent crush fabrics are even more stunning sewed up than they were  stacked in my stash (must remember this). cutting into gorgeous fabric is sometimes the hardest part. i have to say that i really feel inspired by the projects in malka dubrawsky's new book - fresh quilting - and this will definitely not be the last project i make from it. the book really lives up to its name - fresh. and the colors and modern feel of the projects - just fabulous.

it was just breathtaking outside when i went out to take these photos. it's very still and very cold, but sunny and the world is covered in frost. there is the most marvelous hush, tho' sound is traveling far in the stillness...i heard a dog barking off in the distance and horses snuffling from the other direction. so nice to have had a moment to stand, breathe in and enjoy it.

happy monday.

My you were on a mission! It's beautiful. I love the idea of backing with fleece, I'll have to try that! Happy Monday!

The quilt is beautiful! I have always loved quilts but lack the patience to learn to sew. The fleece idea is a good one for comfort.

Cotton or wool have long shelf lives ... since fleece isn't a natural fiber, do you know how long it will last before deteriorating?

thanks everybody!

interesting question, will, but much of today's commercial quilt batting isn't natural fibers either, so i'm not sure it matters. i think i'd rather have something i really want to use and if i use a good quality fleece (like i did today), i think it will nicely serve its purpose, for as long as it needs to. i don't think i'm making heirlooms, i think i'm making what the danes call brugskunst - usable art. :-)

Nice quilt.Love the colors, very modern and user friendly. If you are making an heirloom that would be a different story. I have just discovered a wonderful quilt batting from a lovely family in Canada. They have their own sheep and the wool is made into batting. Heavenly, absolutely wonderful. If you are interested, I can forward that info. Your fleece is such a great idea when the item is used frequently and needs regular laundry. Love, love your photography. Very inspiring. Very settling. (my term for needing to calm down in 2011!)
